Kirkwood Festival 4 – 6 June 2010

For regular festival goers it is important that you take note of the fact that instead of the usual last week-end in June our favourite festival has moved to the beginning of June – ahead of the other major event of 2010 – to ensure that you miss none of the soccer action!

Absa Kirkwood Wildlife Festival – the wildest ‘jol’ in South Africa! – Rated as one of the top festivals in the country is taking place from June 4th to 6th this year.
Kirkwood has something for everyone in the family.

The festival features 320 specialist stalls, free entertainment all weekend, the Eastern Cape’s biggest wine fair, kids entertainment (funfair rides and our favourite clown duo Popsi and Hobi), gourmet food and the most amazing car displays.

Top artists include Prime Circle, Juanita Du Plessis, Kurt Darren, Dozi and Nianell, as well as the Soweto String Quartet.

For cat lovers – a must see is the Cat show Champs.

Take in the “freeflight” owl show in the “Walk on the Wildside” tent and get up close some some of our country’s scariest creepy crawlies and snakes.

One of the country’s biggest game auctions takes place on Saturday 5th.

Bridgestone Production Cars – Aldo Scribante 1 May 2010

BRIDGESTONE PRODUCTION CARS TO SIZZLE IN PE

2010 is panning out to be a spectacular season for the Bridgestone Production Car Championship. Although the entries are a bit down from previous years, the racing is more action packed than ever and much of the same is expected at Aldo Scribante (PE) on 1 May.

Following the postponement of the Phakisa event, round three of the Bridgestone Production Car Championship will take place in Port Elizabeth on 1 May 2010 and Audi Motorsport will be looking to maximize their home ground advantage.

The 2009 outing to Aldo Scribante yielded very favourable results for Audi Motorsport with the three times Class A champions taking a race win and four podium finishes.

Audi Motorsport’s 2010 driver line-up includes three multiple South African Champions, two of whom reside in the Mandela Metropolitan.
A “double points” victory at Killarney a month ago has given Johan Fourie and his IndyOil crew the boost that they needed to get back into the Bridgestone Production Car Championship fight. The team will hoping that their Cape Town success will be repeated in Port Elizabeth on 1 May 2010.

Aldo Scribante is Johan’s home away from home. Whilst he resides in Cape Town, his racing team is based in PE. The team does a fair amount of testing at the tight and twisty circuit and this is clearly evident in their race results. Johan has achieved three podium finishes in the last four races held at Aldo Scribante.

Be sure not to miss the action on Saturday 1 May 2010.

Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika

The South Africa National anthem pulls together two anthems, five languages – and over 47 million people.

Enoch Sontonga (1873-1905) is the composer of Nkosi SikeleliAfrica (God Bless Africa), which has been part of the South African national anthem since 1994. He was born in Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape.

It was also the official African National Congress (ANC) anthem and is still the national anthem of Tanzania and Zambia.

KNOW OUR ANTHEM

Nkosi sikelel’ iAfrika
Maluphakanyisw’ uphondo lwayo,
Yizwa imithandazo yethu,
Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo.

Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso,
O fedise dintwa la matshwenyeho,
O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso,
Setjhaba sa South Afrika – South Africa.

Uit die blou van onse hemel,
Uit die diepte van ons see,
Oor ons ewige gebergtes,
Waar die kranse antwoord gee.

Sounds the call to come together,
And united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom,
In South Africa our land.

SA Open Golf – 2010 – Port Elizabeth

SA Open: History

The year 1903 is recognised as the official birth of the South African Open Championship. It was first played for in 1893 but was really only a series of exhibition matches between very few professionals. But in 1903 the championship was contested over 36 holes in Port Elizabeth.

On 5 June 2008 Humewood Golf Club was dealt a bitter blow  when it was announced that SA Airways had pulled the plug on their sponsorship of the country‘s biggest golf tournament, the SA Open.

Following the huge success of the South African Open at Humewood in 2006, which saw record crowds line the fairways of the links, SAA announced that it would bring the championship back to Humewood in 2010.

We look forward to seeing Golf enthusiasts from all over the country line the Humewood links course once again in 2010.

After an exciting days golf viewing, relax beside the pool or recap the days events in “the boma” around a glowing fire, at Homeleigh Halt.

Accommodation in Port Elizabeth, South Africa at Homeleigh Halt Guest House which is a pleasant 14 km drive from the Humewood Golf Course.
