Smokie – Take a Minute World Tour
When: 06 April 2011
Where: NMMU Indoor Sports Centre
The internationally successful British pop group Smokie is visiting Nelson Mandela Bay on Wednesday, 6 April with one performance in the NMMU Indoor Sports Centre. With chart-topping hits like Living Next Door to Alice, Lay Back in the Arms of Someone and If You Think You Know How to Love Me, and constant tours of the UK and Europe, Smokie is one of the most popular bands in the world today.
Look at the Guinness Book of Hit Singles and you could be forgiven for thinking Smokie’s success story was a 1970s phenomenon. After all, 11 of their 14 British hits came in that eventful musical decade. However, their massive success story has continued to flourish around the globe including Scandinavia, South Africa, Germany and even China.
Smokie are a band which has sold out tours and gained platinum records in four decades – the 70s, 80s, 90s and the present day.
Their new CD, TAKE A MINUTE has just been recorded and will be released worldwide in February. In SA it will also be released in February by Lefra Productions and Next Music.
SMOKIE fans can expect a complete new show with wonderful new material. But as in any SMOKIE show, the hits will definitely feature. Who can forget Alice?”
Terry Uttley, the founder member of SMOKIE, said they cannot wait to come to South Africa. “This is our favourite country and it has always been a wonderful experience to come to South Africa. The people of South Africa like our music and it is such a warm feeling to get such wonderful support. We have just recorded TAKE A MINUTE and people around the world like our new material and songs and we are very confident that South Africans will also like our new show.”

TONY COX & STEVE NEWMAN live in PE
TONY COX & STEVE NEWMAN The 30 years concert tour!
18 & 19 February 8pm Nightly: Savoy Theatre: Cabaret Style at tables – so bring your snacks!
Literally thousands of people have asked this question? Are Steve Newman and Tony Cox ever going to play together again?
Their tour has hit the road and they’re hitting PE on 18 and 19 February!
These boys have a performance record around the world unequalled by any other South African guitarist and the fact that they are now going to play together again, should be a beacon to many people who would love the opportunity to watch and hear them once more, side by side.
Newman and Cox both have long and distinguished careers as soloists. Both are the recipients of multiple awards through the years and have each collaborated with a small army of other finely honed musicians not only from SA but from all over the world.
The duo though has a special place in the hearts and minds of folk who have seen them in concert. Their irreverent approach to old classics in particular are legendary and have tickled the ribs of a multitude spanning three generations. Indeed their shows are unique in that their jaw-dropping guitar skills can attract three generations of the same family!
The shows promise to be an incendiary series of guitar nights like no other, delivered by two masters of the guitar, performing a mix of their side-splitting golden oldies with new material.
The pair are celebrating 30 years of collaboration with a new album “Return of the Road Warriors”. All their previous albums were recorded at live concerts, bearing testimony to the meaning behind the title of the new CD: Return of the Road Warrriors. The album consists of many Cox/Newman classics that they have for a long time wanted to update and rerecord. The album includes some great new tunes, other whacked-out medleys and a sprinkling of new solo pieces.
It is also a rare and unique album of music from two loved musicians tht stretches all boundaries of skill and performance and has, at its core, a warm beating heart.
The new album will be available at th PE leg of their 30 Years Concert Tour.
Tickets are R105.00 at Computicket! (www.computicket.com /083 915 8000 / Checkers) Don’t miss this one folks!
Venue: Savoy Theatre, Perridgevale
Event Address: Corner of Collett & Rochelle Road, just off Cape Road at Greenacres Hospital

27 January – 6 February – “Rocking through the DECADES” – Guild Theatre, East London – 043 743 0704
From 23 February – Port Elizabeth - “Rocking Through the DECADES” – Booking through Computicket.
In the audiovisual company of comedian Rob Van Vuuren, Centrestage takes you on a time travelling trip through the different musical styles, right back to the Hop in the fifties as they recreate the Shanana-styled Doo Wop sound, before visiting the innocence of Cliff Richard and the Shadows in the early 60’s. Elvis put a sexier spin on rock n roll in his ‘come-back special’ before the Beatles embraced psychedelia. We trace the signature 70’s rock of Boston, Toto, Led Zeppelin and ZZ Top, before taking a re-look at the fun side of the 80’s with brand new inclusions such as Break My Stride, One Night in Bangkok, Mr Robato, Der Kommisar, Safety Dance and others. We then move to the 90’s as the boyband sound gained prominence, as the boyband Escape takes us full circle before arriving right back to celebrate some of the current chart topping favourites.
Rocking Through the Decades is an all-new fun musical celebration from the Centrestage All-Star showband.
Centrestage are offering the most amazing opportunity to organisations to help them with their fundraising efforts through their “Rocking Through the Decades” shows. For further details visit their website.
